1. Laboratory diagnosis (most
common). A sample of blood is tested for the level of circulating
thyroid hormone. The levels of thyroid hormone in Hyperthyroid cats
can be mild, (just above normal) or levels 2 -3 times normal.
Concurrent kidney disease is common and should be evaluated
before and after therapy. Other testing may include feline leukemia
and feline immune deficiency virus.
2. Thyroid tissue function
can be measured by the Radiopharmacuetical TC99. This compound acts
like iodine and is absorbed by the hyper functioning thyroid tissue.
The gland is then examined using a sensitive gamma camera radiation
detection devise. The advantage is that the abnormal tissue can be
identified as to location and hyperactivity. Abnormal tissue can be
located anywhere from the base of the tongue to the base of the
heart. 70% of the cases involve hyperfunctioning tissue in multiple
sites. Up to 5% of the cases involve thyroid carcinoma (cancer)
which usually involves metatastic lesions in the lungs.
