To assure public safety, the Illinois State Department of Nuclear Safety has established very strict guidelines regarding the release of Veterinary Nuclear Medicine patients. The level of residual radioactivity in a cat following treatment will be at a level over five times less than allowed for human patients receiving the same treatment. It is suggested that owners not have close contact (less than two yards) with treated cat for mare than one hour per day for the three weeks following treatment. Total daily exposure to radioactivity would be less than one receives from natural sources each day. Young children and expectant mothers would be restricted from any close contact with a treated cat or its litter box for a period of three weeks following treatment.
